Venue Review: Òran Mór, Glasgow

Òran Mór

Glasgow’s Òran Mór is a venue The Jiggers know very well indeed, and we’ve worked very closely and successfully with them to provide ceilidh as well as DJ and covers services for weddings, corporate events and a few retirement do’s as well.

Location

Òran Mór (Gaelic for ‘great melody of life’ or ‘big song’) is at the top of Byres Road in the west-end of Glasgow. The building is the former Kelvinside Parish Church and is a great setting for weddings and ceilidhs.

Quirky Feature

There is a vast auditorium with an interesting mural ceiling by Alasdair Gray. The room includes the busts of great figures of the Reformation including John Calvin and John Knox. You can’t help but wonder what they’re thinking!

What makes it a good venue?

It’s a spacious venue with a gothic atmosphere (being a former a church building) and we’ve always found the staff very efficient and helpful. It’s at the heart of Glasgow’s West End, and is right opposite the Botanic Gardens, which are good for wedding photos.

Our Impressions

A good-sized large dance-floor, perfect for ceilidh dancing. We usually get set up as the meal is finishing off, but the place is big enough for this not to be a distraction to guests. The food of course is great.
